Just a few tips for holiday travel.
Book early. Yes you can save money on travel is you book your flight early. The holiday season is well, the season for travel. Everyone and their mother is traveling to see their mother! And, saving cash during the holidays makes everyone happy.
Avoid peak travel dates? Yes avoid the busiest travel day of the year, Thanksgiving. Also, avoid the day before Thanksgiving, these two days are more expensive, generally. But, the best-kept-secret travel day…wait for it…Christmas day. Now, I know it’s not ideal to leave your family during Christmas dinner, but the airports are dead on the 25th. If you can skip out late that evening, you’ll save for sanity avoiding long security lines, packed planes and crazy, cranky people—and you just may get a whole row on the plane to yourself to stretch out and relax.
Know your airports and the security rules. My parents are both commercial pilots and I have been traveling for years, going through security lines and flying standby. Nothing drives me more crazy than the people who abruptly stop with their 15 roller suitcases so you run smack into the, or the people who somehow missed the security restrictions and hold up the lines (because they aren’t long enough already) practically unpacking their suitcases finding all their liquids and getting mad because they have to get rid of their expensive 7 ounce perfume. The rules of the TSA (Transportation Security Authority) in every airport in the U.S. for liquids or gels is…3.4 ounces or 100ml. Please check your personal belongings before you enter the security line and have your items in a clear plastic sack before so you don’t hold up the lines.
Check your flight status, during the holidays and winter weather, flights get delayed and/or canceled. For which ever airline you are flying, there will be an 800-number with an automated system asking you the flight number, day of departure and you’ll get up-to-date information about your flight.
Pack lightly. Yes, during the winter months you need boots, jackets, sweaters and whatever else to stay warm. But remember, it’s the holidays and you will come back with more gifts than you will need, so on the way to your destination pack less than what you think you will need.

Cappuccino, please
The Swiss sure do know their way around rich, decadent food. I’m in gluttony heaven. Cappuccinos with chocolate sprinkled on top, chocolates, truffles and macrons-oh my! Hot chocolate, cheese fondue, heavy cream (thick as a slow moving glacier), ice cream and meringue…more chocolate and more espresso!

There is just something about a small boutique shop in the middle of a cobblestone street market that makes the chocolate and espresso taste so much better. You just can’t get a cappuccino in the States that tastes as good as it does in Europe.
Yes, I believe it does have to do with the cultural experience that goes into the whole process—life stands still during morning coffee (not American coffee-actually you order in German “eine Tasse Kaffee bitte” or in French “une tasse de café s’il vous plait” and you receive a double shot of espresso). When 9 a.m. rolls around people are sitting in a café with a cappuccino and a croissant or a pastry, not worried about 40 minutes of traffic to get to work. Oh how to not worry about the time.
I suppose that it doesn’t help I have had two espressos with thick cream before bed…
Tipsy on apple juice
You read it correctly; the Swiss put something crazy in their apfelsaft (apple juice)! Or, it could just be the extreme fatigue from jet lag and trekking from Zürich to Bern, Switzerland for the past few days—making JustSayGo TV host Ron and videographer Imran laugh uncontrollably. It was quite a lot of fun.
I would also have to say, even with my mediocre German speaking skills (I can order a mean cappuccino and get directions to and from—the Swiss German dialects and not even close to standard German).
We cannot seem to order pizza on this trip. In Zürich we ordered a Margherita pizza (Mozzarella, tomato and basil), what did we get? Just a cheese pizza. When we asked where the basil was the server pointed and said “In it.” And then brought us four leaves of basil. At a restaurant called Anker in Bern, we ordered a pizza with tomatoes, artichoke hearts, green peppers and mushrooms…our pizza arrived without tomatoes and green peppers. Again, we asked about the peppers, and the server laughed and said “I told them to put peppers,” and then laughed and walked away.
I have to say, pizza in America is way better—and more predictable.
Über Mod
Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn.
Well, actually, we have arrived in Bern, Switzerland and we are at the ultra modern … Holiday Inn Bern Westside. I wouldn’t really have guessed a Holiday Inn to be as uppity as this, but the flooring is rich, dark wood, rooms flushed with vibrant lime green walls, hard lines and tile showers with sliding glass bathroom doors.

As modern as it is, I even stood in my room for more than 20 minutes until I has to ask someone how to turn on the light to my room, which involves having a magnetic strip room key that has to be inserted into a slot and then the lights pressed on—the same key is used to access the floors on the elevator.

I look forward to learning more about Bern … it was a city that has been around since 1191, so I am looking forward to more … Medieval than modern. More to come!
Traveling Abroad? Register for Safety
A good thing to consider when traveling abroad is to register your travel plans with the U.S. Department of State. Now, why would you do this? Millions of Americans travel abroad with no difficulties each year. However, U.S. embassies and consulates assist nearly 200,000 Americans each year who are victims of crime, accident, or illness, or whose family and friends need to contact them in an emergency.
The registration allows you to record information about your trip so that the Department of State can use it to assist you in case of an emergency. Registration is voluntary and does not costs, but it should be a part of your travel planning.
To access registration with the U.S. Department of State visit travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/index.aspx and click on “Create Account.” From there you can register and individual or an organization.

No more than a week ago today, JustSayGo TV returned from shooting on location in beautiful Durango, Colo. (watch for the video November at www.justsaygotv.com and www.kdvr.com/lifestyle/travel), and we are gearing up to hop over the Pond to Switzerland.
Follow us along this exciting journey, as JustSayGo TV will have you sipping hot chocolate in Zürich, tasting fondue in Gruyère to a BearPark in Bern.
